Hi everyone, this is a two-parter! Just curious to see what answers I get...
a.) When thinking about baby names, do you tend to lean more toward cultural names, family names, uniqueness, or something like literary or pop-culture or even floral inspirations? I guess what I'm asking is what category do the names you like fall into, and why do you think that is?
b.) What do you think about these name combinations? Just for fun! I'm not naming anyone anytime soon. What would you change about them, what do they make you think of?
girls:
Deirdre Isolt
Brigid Maria (pron. ma-rye-ah)
Agnes Roisin (pron. ro-sheen)
boys:
Colm Cornelius (pron. col-um)
Desmond Francis
Malachy Niall (pron. mal-ah-key nye-all)
Half poll, half opinion - names and meanings?
a. I have a weird sense of desire to be different. Can't tell you why, I just like names that are different or original or even way out there. I have a pinchet for beautiful names that are not specifically cultural oriented. I love irish and celtic names like everyone else, but everyone is naming their child something celtic these days. Pretty soon there will be the celtic word for roadway used. I have favorites from every culture that seem to bounce from one area to another not because the culture moved, but because it is beautiful and original enough that someone decided to name their child that. I have a pinchet for some traditional classic names, some really old generation names in reuse, some way out there things and random words that look pretty in another language. Call me odd, but I believe my child will either hate me for it, if I ever have one, or will stand out like a sore thumb. eh, so be it.
b. I hate Dierdre Isolt. Dierdre is all right but Isolt is not for me. I know it is pronounced differently in it's original language, but these days no one tries to investigate it. Dierdre Isolt reminds me of a Danger girl from 1920's serial detective novels based in Normandy-France.
Brigid Maria is not bad, I would like it alot better if it were Brighitia Maria (Brah-gee-ta Mah-ree-ah)
Agnes Roisin is hard to listen to when I say it. Agnes sounds too much like my Great Aunt's name and Roisin screams to me that there are culture mashes in there somewhere.
Colm Cornelius is not that bad. Colm is great, love it, Cornelius sounds like a bad stagename for a standup improve actor just begging the audience to laugh when his jokes aren't that funny.
Desmond Francis is not on my even sounds good list. It's like naming a child French-y EuroAcceent for Demon and then adding Percival on the end just for kicks.
Malachy Niall is different and is gaining favor every time I say it again. But when I read it I see ma-latch-ee Nee-All, first time I read it I thought it was tennesee hillbilly native American mix. But I'm liking it more and more as I reread it. Maybe if it were Malachi Neil, it'd read better for me.
Reply:I have different qualifications for girls vs boys names. Boys name, I definitely like traditional names and most of the ones I love happen to be quite common (Nicholas, Matthew, John) and I don't mind.
With girls names, I love two types of names 1) traditional but not too common (e.g., Fiona, Alexandra, Adriana); 2) unisex names (Peyton, Rowan, Sydney)
I like the first two girls names from your list. Agnes is too "old lady".
I don't like your boys names.
Reply:I would say Maria how it's suppose to be, Roisin as Roy-in. Colm without the pronounced 'um' and Malachy as Ma-latch-ee.
These names don't make sense I am sorry to say. And some of them I would say wouldn't fly well with your child in the long run. Pick something that is unique but no defying the laws of English. Your child will appreciate it as well.
Desmond is cute. Francis not so much. They would probably not be to proud of. Brigid is a cute name, and it's true to English as well. Agnes is nice in theory but the nickname would be Aggie.
Reply:Well I would go for more unique names. I guess I lean toward cultural. For uniqueness, I just like to stand out more, I guess bold would be the word. But then I like to be simple.
I like the second one for the girls. I was thinking about the spelling for Maria, and I kind of like the spelling Mahrya. I don't know why I like it, it just seems... Pleasant... I guess.
For the guys, I like Desmond the best for the first names, even though that doesn't exactly float my boat. Just out of the ones there. And for the middle name, I like Niall.
(:
Reply:Isolt is nice...I prefer Isolde.
Desmond is best in the boy's category.
I do not like any of the other names.
Reply:they are are awful in my opinion I can not say why they just do not hit it with me sorry
Reply:A) I like unique names because I really hate common names. Everyone seems to be called the smae things these days and it's really annoying. I like uniqueness and uncommon names.
B) I like Deirdre but not Isolt. I like Isolde better. It sounds better. Deirdre Isolde. I don't like Brigid Maria. I like Brigette. I like Agnes, not Roisin. I hate Malachy Niall. I hate Colm but I like Cornelius. And I like Desmond and Francis, but not Desmond Francis. Not together.
